I am grateful for a recruiter I can trust and that has provided an example of military service that I can proudly strive to follow. It has been said that to be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved. Until a recruit enters Basic Military Training, the attitude and conduct of their recruiter serves as a window through which the recruit observes the Air Force core values in action. It is important to remember that a recruit’s attitude toward military service is often developed in large measure through their experience with their recruiter. Because I had learned to trust him, I took my recruiter’s advice and adjusted my career path to one that more fully leverages my strengths and aligns with my longer-term goals. After waiting 6 months for a PJ job, he advised me to entertain other opportunities. The more I worked with my recruiter, the more I knew I could trust him. As I originally sought a pararescue job, he coached and motivated me to pass the Physical Ability and Stamina Test. I felt as though he sincerely cared about how I could best be an asset to the Air Force and how the Air Force could help me achieve my career and personal goals. ![]() It was at this point a friend who had recently joined the Air Force referred me to the Air Force and I met SSgt Edward Marquez.Īfter meeting SSgt Marquez, I noticed an immediate difference in the manner in which he viewed his responsibilities as a recruiter. Due in large part to poor communication, after a lot of work and effort on my part, a deadline was missed and I would not be able to re-apply for another year. My experience working with the recruiter was unfortunate. I originally applied for a specific commissioning program in another branch of the military. I contemplated joining the military for years until I felt I was at a point in my life when I was ready. I leave for Basic Military Training this July. I have been in the Delayed Enlistment Program since July of 2010 and recently booked an Airborne Cryptologic Linguist job. I feel that my experience in joining the Air Force adequately highlights the importance of a recruiter’s role. ![]() For this reason, the trust they place in their recruiter is almost sacred in nature. Especially for those just out of high school or in their 20′s, signing a contract and committing such a large chunk of time can be intimidating and is not taken lightly. Air Force, their recruiter provides the essential role of guide and adviser as they map out the next 4 to 6 years of their life.
